50 Greatest Cartoons of all Time
Found this great blog post about the 50 greatest cartoons of all time, which he found on wikipedia. I have purchased several cartoon collections that say they contain the greatest cartoons of all time, so I will definitely be comparing them to this list, as this list was voted on by those in the animation industry, so, there could be a few differences as those who work in it may not find the same ones as funny as we do and vice versa.
The 50 Greatest Cartoons was a 1994 book by animation historian Jerry Beck that compiled a list of the 50 greatest animated cartoons of all-time as voted upon by those in the animation industry. Source:wikipedia.org
That article contains links to all of the wikipedia entries for the cartoons, and this blogger took it a step better and linked to all of the available videos online, on Youtube, Google Video, etc.
Found a cool list of The 50 Greatest Cartoons as voted on by the animation industry in 1994. As a holiday present to our readers we’ve put together a link to an online video for each one below! (we found a video for all but 6.) So many wonderful, funny and trippy cartoons spanning the decades (including some that were banned.) Source: Cityrag
I will definitely check them out, anyone see any that were missed, or any they don’t think should be there?

Blockbuster Still Sucks
In a move that won’t be dragging me off of the couch, Blockbuster announced today that they will be offering free movies to Netflix customers who bring in an address flap off of their mailers. I guess they are getting desperate to drag people back in to their stores. I haven’t rented a video from them in a few years, they made me mad because it seemed like every time that I rented a movie and dropped it off in one of their drop off boxes, they said it was late. Hey it was in the box before it was supposed to be back, and I don’t remember anyone saying it had to be inside, if that was the case it should be posted. I would expect them to check the drop off boxes when the movies were do back, not the next day, or the day after that. So, I’ll say it again, Blockbuster still sucks! The whole point of using Netflix is so you don’t have to go to the video store to get a movie.
Blockbuster has launched a new promotion to attract Netflix users to its DVDs-by-mail service: give them free in-store movies. Through December 21, Netflix users can bring in the address flaps off their mailers and exchange them for a free rental at any local Blockbuster store.
Blockbuster wants to get the word out about its Total Access program, which allows online subscribers to bring rentals they received in the mail to a local store and exchange them for free rentals. In addition, the next movie in the customer’s queue is shipped immediately, rather than being delayed until the fulfillment center receives the first disk in the mail. Source: ars technica
Yawn.

Just Because It’s Funny…
Here is one I ran accross this morning, funny because it’s true, the Top 10 Dirtiest Names in Sports. Featuring names like Dick Butkus and Chubby Cox, how can you go wrong?
How could the miss Jack Arute? That one always got a chuckle from me and my friends when the announcer would say, “Lets go down to Jack Arute”. Come on, you know it’s funny.

Entourage Extras from Cingular
A few of my favorite shows are from HBO, the Sopranos, Rome, Deadwood and Entourage. Cingular is going to offer some additional content from one of the shows characters, Johnny Drama. Victory!
Cingular Wireless, the No. 1 U.S. cellphone service, said on Wednesday that cable channel HBO has produced a special mobile mini-series based on the popular show “Entourage” that extends the story beyond what is shown on television.
Cingular said its mini “Entourage” series, with episodes that last 4 minutes each, will follow one story line based on “Entourage” character Johnny Drama and not distract from the regular series. Source: Reuters.com
Unfirtunately, you have to signup for Cingular’s $14.99 monthly media plan and its HBO premium service which costs another $4.99 a month. I guess I’ll just wait until someone posts them to YouTube.

Media Pushing YouTube Valuation at 1 Billion
This is ANOTHER of those ridiculous stories about how much some of these web 2.0 companies are worth, today’s story is YouTube. According to this piece from the NYPost, YouTube founder Chad Hurley just pushed his companies value to 1 billion because of a week at investment bank Allen & Co.’s annual Sun Valley confab.
That’s how much more he might get if he sold his company now - after he spent five days in the Idaho mountains being sucked up to by virtually every big-name exec in media.
Prior to the Allen & Co. conference, the word in the industry was that YouTube - barely a year old - could fetch $600 million if it were sold to one of the major media companies.
Now, following the Sun Valley excitement, the buzz is that Hurley and his backers have their sights set on $1 billion for the video-swapping site - which now streams nearly 100 million videos per day.
That figure would top the nearly $600 million that both News Corp. - the parent company of The Post - paid for MySpace and NBC paid for iVillage.
Aside from the copyright issues that will come up, YouTube doesn’t even know how it’s going to make money yet, well at least they aren’t trying to make any money yet, as evidenced from their site. there are no ads on the site, I assume because advertisers know that there will be a low click thru rate and no one buying anything. The only way I can see YouTube making money is by a subscription model, either the artists have to pony up or the users will. If they impose fees on the users, they may go somewhere else, same goes for the artists, so what to do and how the heck are they worth 1 billion dollars? I just don’t see it.
This NY Post item caught my eye - YouTube was the toast of Herb Allen’s Sun Valley conference, and therefore is now worth $1 billion. I don’t buy it. I don’t think the founders are smoking this shit, I think the media is - at least I hope that’s how it is. Why? Simple really. While YouTube is an amazing service, with extraordinary uptake, I’ve been told (and it seems obvious on first glance) that its core content is mostly copyrighted material. (I make this statement after being told as much by two very senior folks at major media companies who have studied content patterns on YouTube.)
And then goes on to ask who would buy them, and lays out some reasons why or why not someone would or could buy them. Nice quote from his comments,
You Tube is not a must have, it’s a nice to have. Somewhere to go and upload a video for free. Nice to have’s aren’t worth a billion dollars.
Techdirt ways in and says pretty much the same thing, but did have a good idea on how Skype could make some money,
Perhaps instead of starting new businesses (that compete with YouTube), Skype’s founders should just consult other hot startups on how to maximize the insanity right before selling out.
All this web 2.0 stuff trying to get bought up for a billion really drives me crazy, wonder what I could get for Jimmy Daniels 2.0? I’m not making any money on this site either, but other sites are paying for it, so I’m not worried about it until I get millions and millions of followers all downloading my RSS feed everyday. ![]()

San Diego Comic Con
Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a geek, a collector and comic book buff. One of these days I am going to make to the biggest comic book convention on the planet, the San Diego Comic Con. Of course it’s not merely a comic book convention anymore, as many new films are debuted or pumped up here, as well as TV shows like Lost, or the new Heroes show coming out on NBC. Heck, I think they even had panels on Spiderman 3, which doesn’t come out until next year.
What is really cool nowadays, is that on the cable station G4, they have had shows talking about what is going on during the con, they are even filming the shows at the con, with the fans standing around and watching. This is really cool, as San Diego is a long ways away from me, and will require a big outlay of cash just to get there and stay, let alone go and buy the stuff I’ll be looking for.
If you need more in depth coverage, because, let face it, how many lame jokes can you put up with from the hosts of the G4 show, and how many times do we have to hear the guy hit on the girl in some sort of geekish way? I think I would much rather have a couple “real” geeks simply talk about the show and show some of the sites from the con instead of a couple who are only interested because they are on a TV show. Anyway, if you need more coverage, visit Newsarama, the premiere site on the web for comics and comics related stuff. One story that stands out right now is the story about how Marvel is putting together the lost Fantastic four episode that never got completely published by Lee and Kirby. Apparently, they just used some of the panels as part of a story that was never told before in issue #108, so we are actually going to get to see the completed story, once Lee scripts it and, hopefully, Joe Sinnott will be available to ink it. I can’t wait to see it. Maybe they should let Joe ink it and then get someone like Scott Williams to ink a copy and see what he could do with it.

Click, the Movie
We went to see the new Adam Sandler movie, Click, this weekend and I must say, Click is a great movie. I went in expecting one of those comedies that are just that, a comedy. I don’t remember seeing any commercials for the film that included anything really serious, or gave me any idea that it could be otherwise. I really don’t want to say anything about what happened or how the movie ended, as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, because it was completely unexpected by me. Go see the film for yourself, I think you’ll enjoy it.
